WINNER CHOSEN!
When one of the local members of The Cookbook Junkies mentioned she was selling some books and items, I jumped. Dawn was downsizing and gave me an incredible deal on a French Dutch Oven and many cookbooks for future giveaways. (I also snagged an All Clad pan for myself.)
I had purchased an extra copy of Molly Steven’s All About Braising and planned to pair it with another item but the Fontignac Dutch Oven (made in France) is the perfect pairing. Dawn only used it once — it appears new and truly feels of the same quality as Le Creuset. The amazon link to the pot gives you a little clearer photo – it may not be exactly the same item but it is a 5 quart, French made dutch oven. I am ashamed to admit that I almost wavered and wanted to keep it – but I persevered and once I hit publish there is no going back.

My favorite thing to make on cold wintery days is definitely pot roast and from scratch biscuits. I love pot roast so much because its one of those great meals who’s leftovers can be used for other things. Happy labor Day weekend to everyone!
Winter cooking of course includes holiday cooking, and that means turkey. I actually make turkey a lot during November and December, when the price is low. For holiday turkey dinners, I make it special by going all out with the side dishes.
This pot would be nice for one of my favorites, a pork tenderloin cooked hot and fast in a 450 oven.
Oh, it’s Saturday, it’s Saturday!

LOL this is the winning comment for the pot and braising cookbook…
A steaming hot bowl of soup is so good in winter, and one of my favorites is French onion. The crouton and cheese put it over the top.
This would make a big batch of italian sausage in a tomato gravy, with ravioli.
My Nanny used to make big pots of Mutton stew, loved my Nanny but hated to be in the house on those days. and yes she used mutton…ewwwwww it was nasty.
All About Roasting is Molly’s other great book.
For a great but simple winter dinner, you can’t beat good old spaghetti and meatballs. Unless you add a side of freshly made garlic bread.
Spaghetti and meatballs sounds good!
Stovetop lasagna would be a good dish to make in this pot.
Lentil soup
The thread on Facebook about mac & cheese inspired me to make a batch today, but I used my casserole slow cooker. In winter, I like to bake the mac & cheese in the oven, and I top it with a thick layer of seasoned bread crumbs or those crispy fried onions. The summer slow-cooker version doesn’t have that yummy topping, which I love.
A good hearty soup or stew would be perfect for a cold day
I’d love a really big pot of Jenny’s mac & cheese right now.
Jenny’s mac and cheese does sound good right about now
It’s a beautiful pot, thanks for the chance to own it! I would use it daily.
I hope everyone is having a great day today!
Fingers crossed again
In thinking about braised foods, I remembered a dish I haven’t made in forever, goulash. My mother (who didn’t really enjoy cooking but still had a hot meal on the table for us every night) used to make a simple goulash I’ve never been able to replicate.
Happy Hump Day!
I would make a crawfish etouffe in this gorgeous pot.
One of the best things about roasting a chicken is having all that lovely meat left over. One of my favorite cold-weather dishes using leftover chicken is a nice pot pie. This gorgeous pan would be great for making the white sauce that’s the base for the filling.
I’ll give a quote for today:
There is only one kind of love, but there are a thousand imitations.
-Francois de La Rochefoucauld
A shrimp and rice paella-type dish would cook up nice in this pot.
Today, something a little funny:
“The surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that it has never tried to contact us.”
~ Bill Watterson, Calvin and Hobbes ~
I’ll be doing much more braising now that the seasons are changing. Pork especially.
Winter foods, for me, are often comfort foods, and at top of my list of comfort foods is mashed potatoes. Mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm.
One of my favorite comfort foods is rotini in a browned butter and cream sauce with lots of fresh parmesan.
Have a most enjoyable weekend, everyone!
As I was pulling a jar of last year’s apple jelly to give to someone this afternoon, I realized that this beautiful French pot would be perfect for making a big batch of applesauce, followed by a smaller batch of apple butter, and yes, even a batch of apple jelly.
There’s a lot of entries.
I’m as ready as I can be for the cool weather and the beginning of gumbo season!
Winter’s coming
Oh, I’m not ready for winter food yet. I still want zucchini, and tomatoes, and cucumbers, and peaches. But even the goldenrod is turning brown. It’s coming.
I live in the high desert of SoCal, and it seems we are having an early fall this year. It may be a bit hot out, 98°, but there is a bit of a coolness to the wind. This usually doesn’t happen until at least the second week of October.
Hearty casseroles are a staple of winter cooking and eating. Lots of carbs.
Time to start planning my holiday cooking.
OMG…I saw actual mutton in my supermarket today! I swear I smelled my Nanny’s horrid mutton stew when I saw it. YUCK
One of my favorite things about winter is the smell of soups and stews simmering in a warm house.
For me, winter cooking involves a lot of baking, too, especially bread. And breakfast goodies (some of which are bread).
It’s Tuesday…it is Tuesday, isn’t it?
Wow! Today’s weather is so cool! It truly is like October here in the high desert of Southern California. Usually we are sweating away.
I can smell fall in the air. One of my favorite times of year.
Winter cooking, of course, includes holiday cooking, and that means roast turkey in our house! We love it so much that we have it on non-holidays, too, whenever we find it on sale. It’s the perfect winter dinner.
I want winter to arrive!
I think the first thing that I would cook in this pot would be chicken. I will be cooking one for dinner tonight.
It’s a good pot for a curry. Thanks for the wonderful giveaway!
