A very special giveaway (as I write those words – a Very Brady Christmas just popped in my mind and I want it gone!). I love cookbooks! Don’t we all? I am not a great fan of vintage cookbooks although I have a few that I consider classics such as the two cookbooks I am sharing today.
Recently, I was fortunate enough to run across copies of Mary and Vincent Price’s The Treasury of Great Recipes (First Edition) and The Gourmet Cookbook Volumes I and II (in the case) – and since I have these in my collection already – I’m giving them away to one of you!
The Treasury of Great Recipes is very dear to me. I wrote a piece on this great book with an interview of Victoria Price for Tastebook. You can read that here, if you haven’t already. The Gourmet Set is a must have too – over 700 pages each – and they just look cool on your shelf. You’ll look fancy.
Random number generator picked Anne – #131 congratulations!
GIVEAWAY: To enter this giveaway, leave a comment on this post telling me anything at all. This post will be special – you can leave a different comment every day – until May 23rd when I pick a winner. One comment per day per person. It is open to U.S. addresses only. Remember to enter every day! While you are here – scroll through and enter all the other giveaways still open – and good luck! Sharing this post is most appreciated.
This giveaway is open to everyone – not just females who have bore children – males are invited to join in as well. Everyone can enter. This giveaway is sponsored by me. Now I have to bleach my mind to get the Bradys out of there!

Oh, and for Christmas, Mrs. Peter Folger’s Fruit Cake. Fun little book.

We celebrated Mother’s Day with lost of food! Dad sat outside at the grill and I worked the afternoon away inside. BBQ Ribs, Bacon Wrapped Cabbage, Squash Casserole, Crab Ragu, & Sausage Links.
The holidays are all about good food and good family for us. While my family is pretty southern in their tastes they accommodate me when I want to cook something else. The Crab Ragu was not originally on the menu and was added last minute. But it worked out! It was well accepted!
Susan Broughton says
I have never owned these and would love to have them.

Another of my favorite vintage cookbooks is a slim book called Any One Can Bake, “Compiled by the Education Department of the Royal Baking Powder Co.,” from 1929. The name Angie Bell is written in pencil on the first page, along with “May 1929.” I love things like that; it connects me to cooks who have gone before me.
Kim Wood says
Having these in my collection would fill me with such honor and gratitude. They are gorgeous records of moments in history.

Anne says
Long ago, when I was young and didn’t know better, I made Julia Child’s stuffed deboned turkey. I taped the TV episode where she prepared it, and followed her every move. (And yes, the VCR remote was nasty by the time I was finished–especially the rewind and play buttons.) I even made her duxelles stuffing to cook under the deboned bird. It was fabulous, and I never did it again. But I did it!
Jessica Korves says

This afternoon, I went to our local no-kill animal shelter to drop off some stuff for their annual yard sale, and they let me do a little pre-sale shopping. No cookbooks, but I did score a Norpro tortilla press. Now all I have to do is get some masa harina and dig out my Muy Bueno cookbook…

My go-to applesauce cake recipe is from the two-volume set “The American Heritage Cookbook and Illustrated History of American Eating & Drinking,” copyright 1964, which I picked up at a library sale a few years ago. Sometimes the old recipes are indeed the best.
Karyn M. Newton says
I have a couple of cookbooks at home that I’m planning on entering in the county fair this year. One is over ninety years old, and I picked it up at a used book sale here on campus for probably $0.50.

Anne says
My copy of The Betty Furness Westinghouse Cook Book (“Prepared under the direction of Julia Kiene”), copyright 1954, has the following handwritten inscription:
One of Emily’s Cookbooks. She passed away October 26th “36” yrs. Elsie Kranendonk (1970)
That is one of the saddest, sweetest things I’ve ever seen. I don’t know Emily or Elsie, but I like to think I honor them and their cooking whenever I pick up their book.
Judy says
I think all of us would like to know how you do all you do.
Angela says
A great giveaway!
Danielle Royalegacy says
I’m quite hungry right now, and to make one of their family recipes would certainly satisfy that hunger.
Anne says
My love of cookbooks was sparked by a lovely man at a law firm where I had my first serious job, some thirty years ago. He had been a founding member of the firm but was quite elderly when I knew him. Somehow, he found out I was learning to cook, and he took great delight in choosing cookbooks for me, marking recipes that looked good to him (a few of which I made for him and his wife, whom he called “my bride”), and even giving me a subscription to Gourmet magazine. I still use some of those cookbooks, inscribed in his old-man handwriting, with his bookmarks still in place.
Joan says
Can’t believe my weekend is almost over. Working Sat’s makes for a short weekend. Not enough cookbook time.
Marcia1206 says
Want!
Anne says
Another influential cookbook set during my early years was The Woman’s Day Encyclopedia of Cookery (copyright 1966). I found a complete set at a yard sale in the early 80s, and over the years, I’ve learned a lot from it. For example, through making the cream of cauliflower soup several times, I learned the basics of a good creamed soup, which I now make with my eyes closed from all sorts of veggies.
Susan Broughton says
I would love to win this giveaway!
Karyn M. Newton says

May I confess that I am actually ashamed about how many cookbooks I own? But the worst part of it all is that I still want more–and the books in this giveaway are at the top of my wish list. Thanks for this chance!
Susan Broughton says
Love your blog ! Would love to win these!
Susan Y. says
Thanks for the give-away. These books are treasures–a window into how we ate at a particular point in time. They would be shelved next to Anne Willan’s “Great Cooks and Their Recipes”, or the out of print “The Spice Cookbook”. Love the website–a cookbook is as enjoyable to read as any novel-they have plots, characters, a feel, a setting, etc. plus you can make stuff from them!
Judy says
Still hoping
Louise says
Would love to win these!
Aaron J Rishell says
I need these!!
Susan Broughton says
Would love to have these in my collection
Anne says
As pretty as all the new cookbooks are, I find that I’m much more likely to reach for an older cookbook–I don’t need glossy paper and professional pictures of every recipe. The exception is canning and food preservation, because food safety has come a long way and I want to make sure my home canned foods are safe as well as delicious, so I only utilize modern cookbooks in that category.
Angela says
Want them!
Judy says
The new Vincent Price reissue is great, but there is no substitute for a first edition. Thanks for the chance to win one.
Marcia1206 says
Again please!

Steph says
So classic!
Renee- Kudos Kitchen says
These would be so much fun to own.
Anne says
My most precious cookbook is The American Woman’s Cook Book, edited by Ruth Berolzheimer. My copy was my dear mother’s one and only cookbook. It’s the 1953 edition, so she probably acquired it at about the time she was a young bride. She didn’t really enjoy cooking, and I don’t actually recall her ever using the book (she kept it in a bottom kitchen drawer), but it has a place of honor in my kitchen.
Susan Broughton says
Love your blog !
Terry says
Absolutely beautiful.
Robin Chesser says
Another entry
Anne says

Anne says
When I’m looking through cookbooks at thrift stores, I find I’m much more likely to reach for an older book than a shiny new one. What’s up with that? And I love it when I find handwritten notes in the margins, or a yellowed newspaper clipping of a recipe being used as a bookmark. Maybe because I taught myself to cook as an adult, these connections to the past mean more to me because I don’t have any of my own.
